DECO FOIL SERIES: WEEK #1

Simple & Easy Foiling Techniques: No Heat

It's the first LIVE video in a new series about using foil in your cardmaking! Now, I don't mean kitchen aluminum foil. Although there are uses for that too!

See Jen's playlist on Koala T Crafts YouTube Channel and type in 'aluminum foil'. Several videos should come up using aluminum foil techniques!
Koala T Crafts YouTube Channel
So, the foil I'm talking about is Deco Foil. There are other brands out there but this is the one that we get to play with! It is a decorative foil that is attached to a plastic film that gives this fragile item the ability to be handled and the foil transferred to many of your projects! Deco Foil comes in many colors as well as watercolor blends and a rainbow design which is absolutely GORGEOUS!!

Deco Foil - Transfer Sheets - Green, Ocean Blue, Magenta, Purple, Red & Vibrant Rainbow - Bundle of SIX "Vibrant" Colors

Deco Foil Liquid Adhesive (Glue)

This first video of the Deco Foil Series is full of ideas for using the foil without having to heat it at all! That's right! No foiling machine or laminator needed to make your card beautiful!  Deco Foil's Liquid Adhesive, or Glue, has a narrow tip suitable for writing with. The secret to quick drying times is to apply smooth, thin, even lines. Try to avoid "blobs" where lines meet or turn. These will take longer to dry. When dry, the glue becomes clear and tacky. This is when you can apply your foil, always shiny side up.

You can use your finger or bone folder to burnish the foil onto the paper but the cleanest, clearest image happens when even pressure is applied, like through a Cuttlebug or Big Shot.
Draw with Deco Foil Liquid Adhesive (Glue),
let dry, then press foil with even pressure.

Deco Foil Liquid Adhesive (Glue)

The foil creates a barrier, providing the perfect spot for a little water coloring with the new Distress Oxides!

Deco Foil Glue vs. Alternative

This is fabulous! Beautiful, easy foiling! But what if there was a possibility of an alternative to Deco Foil's Liquid Adhesive (Glue)? Something in a larger amount for all the Christmas Cards you are going to start on? Something that may be less expensive? Regular glues won't work, for once they are dry, they are no longer sticky or...tacky.

Enough clues! You'll have to watch the video and see Jen do a little comparison! (What is really neat is that you are able to see the comments and notice how Jen interacts with the viewers! FUN!)

Items from YOUR craft room!

One of the simplest ways of adding foil bling is using Pop Dots. Simply apply the foil (shiny side up) and you have instant spots of splendor!
Glue Dots Removable Dot Sheets Value Pack, Contains 600 (.5 Inch) Adhesive Dots

Why not try stripes? Any of your tapes will work just as instant and slick as the glue dots!!

Scor-Pal Scor-Tape, 0.25 by 27-Yard

Scotch Advanced Tape Glider with 2 Rolls

of 1/4-Inch by 36-Yard Acid-Free Tape

How many of you have a Xyron Sticker maker? I have seen one that has an opening of about 6 inches! A piece of cardstock, cut into any shape, can be fed through the Sticker Maker and made into an element that has a sticky side. HINT: Make sure to burnish thoroughly prior to exposing the stickiness for best results. Press the foil onto the sticky, shiny side up, and then slowly peel off the excess. Beautiful Bling! You can make up some ahead of time, have fun just foiling! Or when you need that extra 'something-something', it will be right at your fingertips!

Free-hand and Stencils

Deco Foil makes a pen that is similar to a paint pen but has the same liquid adhesive in it that was used earlier to apply foil.  The pen creates an even line of glue continuously, making it easy to write with!

Therm O Web Deco Foil Adhesive Pen, 0.34 fl. oz.

Deco Foil also has an adhesive that comes in a small tub. It's called Transfer Gel and it is fun to play with! Smooth it thinly over your favorite stencil. After removing the stencil, rinse the stencil immediately or have a tub of sudsy water nearby. You will ruin your stencil if it dries on it. Let your project dry completely. This is a great craft for the end of the day when it can sit overnight to dry. Once dry, lay foil over it and carefully press, without moving the image.

Using your fingers or a bone folder to smooth the foil, in any of these examples, is fine. Just remember, smooth, even pressure will give the best result. Using the Cuttlebug or Big Shot works perfectly.

Pulling off the carrier sheet and extra foil to reveal your masterpiece is breathtaking! I love the look of the feathers in the video! You should see it!
Stenciled feathers in rainbow, gold and watercolor foils, double-sided tape lines and Pop Dot foil spots made into a card front!

And this is only the tip of the iceberg, my crafty friends! Jen will be exploring many more ways to add foil to our cards and other paper crafts!  If you are interested in collecting a bundle of some of the items that will be used in the series, check out the link below.

ALCOHOL INKS & YUPO PAPER SERIES: WEEK #6

Making Handmade Cards!

This video turned out to be a viewer participant special! What do you do with all those beautiful papers you made watching the ALCOHOL INKS & YUPO PAPER SERIES? If you are anything like me you have several sheets of each technique, plus some experiments, spread out in front of you.

WEEK #6

How excited was everyone when the video started early? Anyone who was just hanging out was able to vote on each of the examples of the techniques found in the Series. Which ones would be made into cards? (Don't worry, you can catch the video that was recorded LIVE on the Koala T Crafts YouTube Channel, comments and all!)
Jen Ever's Koala T Crafts YouTube Channel

Ghosting and alcohol blending pens

The 'ghosting' technique was shown in WEEK #3 of the series. Viewers couldn't decide so both examples were made into simple cards. Removing existing alcohol ink then accenting with a black alcohol marker made the project very easy and breathtaking!

WEEK #3: Alcohol Markers and Stamping

Texture, Purple, and Gold!

It was difficult to choose which of the mirrored background examples to use. Viewers chose purple and gold! They were cut down to four brilliant squares. The purple was brought to the foreground due to the purple quilted background! Watch WEEK #4 of the Series to see the final result!

WEEK#4: Mirrored and Glossy Cardstock, Mixatives and Water-based Markers

Bold and Beautious!

So many paper creations to choose from, so many ideas!! Many examples of homemade alcohol inks with watercolor markers and alcohol markers used on Yupo paper, Dura-Lar and photo paper, were next on the agenda. Which did the viewers choose? WEEK #2: Getting Your Inks Moving/Techniques and Tools
We watched the process of an experienced crafter take a piece of paper, of which she designed, and create a beautiful card! Truly a piece of "Happy Mail"! The viewer's interaction with the host was fun. Not a one minded the silence while comments were being read.

Watch the Creative Juices Flow!

It was "super cool" to watch behind the scenes. The camera view was widened and we were able to see storage and the whole Koala hat! Watching Jen Evers go through her creating process was a special treat. And though we enjoy the view, we miss seeing her smile as she giggles over a particular comment! Did you leave a comment on the video letting Koala T Crafts know which view you enjoy best!?

Week #5 shall not be left OUT!

This is the link to video WEEK #5. Watch the videos in order if you like. Week by week, they progressively build on techniques that are simple yet create beautiful art!

ALCOHOL INK & YUPO PAPER SERIES: WEEK #5

Techniques and Card Making

The question is: Will there be a WEEK #6 in the Alcohol Inks & Yupo Paper Series? That is up to YOU, the viewer. Every week you have watched as magic was practiced! Do you realize that no matter how hard you try, you will not be able to reproduce the artwork you previously created with the alcohol inks and Yupo paper? That is magic! Let's take a look at how this magic began.

WEEK #1 Begin the Journey

Many of you have known about the alcohol inks. Some have heard of Yupo paper and the unique qualities of being untearable and waterproof. Did you know that Yupo paper is made of polypropylene pellets and is a tree-free paper that is 100% recyclable?  It can be made into items from labels to shopping bags, then used over again! Amazing, isn't it?
Yupo Paper

But what if you are interested in this adventure but your budget hasn't the room for new craft supplies? That is where the video of WEEK #1 begins. Alcohol Inks and Alternate Products showed us how we can get started by using some things you may have in your home! What other surfaces might these inks work on? Watch the following video to find out!
WEEK #1: Alcohol Inks and Alternative Products

WEEK #2 Mode of Transportation

What beautiful colors: blue, violet, teal and yellow! The drips grow and some change color but what can we do to make them move? The surface that we chose is nonporous so the ink can move across the smooth surface! How about picking the paper up and tilting it?

The introduction of the Alcohol Blending Solution and plain 91% Isopropyl Alcohol made the inks change. It seemed as if the drips of alcohol made the colors disappear! Depending on how you apply it, alcohol does remove the ink. Actually, you could erase the whole picture and start over if you wish. Now that's MAGIC! Watch WEEK #2 of Alcohol Inks & Yupo Paper to learn ideas on how to get moving!
WEEK #2: Getting Your Inks Moving/Techniques & Tools

WEEK #3: Having Fun Along the Way

The inks can be moved! Do the inks change color when moved from one color to another? Would it be possible to use an alcohol-based marker on Yupo paper and then use a blending pen to draw?
Ohuhu Alcohol Markers

Alcohol Ink Blending Pen

Will it move the colors or remove the colors? Could a picture be created? Find out by watching WEEK #3 of the Alcohol Inks & Yupo Paper Series!

WEEK #4: What Sights To Behold!

Coming around the bend, we are suddenly blinded by the brilliant view! Mirrored cardstock, in gold or several other colors, is a smooth, nonporous surface.
Gold Mirrored Cardstock

Black Mirrored Cardstock

Several color suggestions

If the brilliant colors and uniqueness of each creation isn't enough for you, a way to move those colors might pique your interest. But then there is the removal or change of color and the possibility of creating a picture amongst the hues. What could there be that could be more dazzling than discovering alcohol inks work on mirrored paper? There is an answer in WEEK #4 of the Alcohol Inks & Yupo Paper Series!
WEEK #4: Mirrored and Glossy Cardstock, Mixatives, and Water Based Markers

WEEK #5: Homeward Bound to Card Making and a Giveaway!

After taking a detour, three new techniques were introduced and the viewers went wild!

Technique 1

Starting with a blank piece of Yupo paper, drops of brilliant inks were added. We were looking for the edge where the colors met and mixed. This area seemed to stay tacky as long as it wasn't too dry. A piece of Deco Foil was laid, shiny, colored side up, onto these areas and burnished with a bone folder. The results were breathtaking!
Alcohol Inks, Yupo paper, and Deco Foil

The gold foil looked as if it was marbled throughout, pushing the colors, creating a beautiful roadmap! Imagine each one different than the others!

Deco Foil, 5 Transfer Sheets, 6" x 12", Gold
Deco Foil Transfer Sheets in Champagne, Spring Green, Aqua, Deep Blue, Lilac & Pink Melon, Bundle of 6

Technique 2

An example was shown of alcohol inks put onto cardstock and they had absorbed into soft pools of color. Looking closer, small dots of gold were scattered across the paper! It was 'Beautimous'! (Yes, that really is a word!)

The process to create a similar image was very simple. After choosing a background stamp and embossing color, Versamark ink was applied to the background stamp then it was pressed onto a colorful piece of Yupo paper. Black embossing powder was added and heated. It's always magical to watch the powder turn shiny and solid! The crackle textured background easily contrasted the colors.

Technique 3

If heat embossing works, what about stamping? Viewers asked if Versamark worked, would Versafine? A solid heart stamp was used for the experiment. Did the ink rub off? What about a Distress Ink? Would Stazon work? The only way to find the answers is to watch WEEK #5: Techniques and Cardmaking!

As you watch the video, you will notice a few tools that are used and briefly mentioned. You can find more information on them below.

On the Horizon

The time flew by faster than we all thought. It was so fun to participate with the others on Friday Free Play. It felt like we were all there, surrounding the work table, chatting and giggling!

Now, what do we do with all of our wonderous works of art? Each step of the way was as exciting and addicting as the first! But when does the cardmaking begin? Unfortunately, time flies when you're having fun and there was no time to go into making cards. As you can imagine, there was a disappointment and a cry went up by the viewers to do a WEEK #6: CARDMAKING!

You will not want to miss this LIVE video on Friday Free Play at 5pm CST. Another chance to catch Jen LIVE is on Wednesdays at 5pm CST for One in Ten by Jen: Card InJENuity from mailbox to masterpiece! Remember when Jen is LIVE, you have a chance to participate in the Koala T Crafts Community!

If you should have any questions for Jen, leave them on the Facebook page or email her at signace@yahoo.com.

GIVEAWAY!
Koala T Crafts is Giving Away a Set of 3 Alcohol Inks: Cranberry, Lettuce & Eggplant, a Silver Mixative plus a Stack of Paper to a viewer! Secondly, 10 other viewers will receive a small pack of assorted papers! So watch the video and leave a comment on the first 5 videos in the Series! You must make your comments by midnight, 11:59pm CST on Friday, May 18, 2018 and the winners will be drawn randomly on Saturday, May 19, 2018!
