How to use UTEE (Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel) Without a Melting Pot
UTEE= Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel
I really want to try this new craft! I could make flowers POP on my cards! The circles in the first video of this series, 'Ranger Melting Pot vs. Darice Hot Glue Melt Pot' were adorable and I think the patterned paper would look neat. I´m thinking of a dog or cat, maybe a person to use. Santa Claus?

What is the first step?
UTEE is an embossing powder. All it needs is a heat source that will get warm enough to make it melt. Will embossing powders work? Yes, but you will not have the exact result as the UTEE. UTEE is a thick powder. It is coarse and chunky like sea salt. It is not fine and in uniform crystals like normal embossing powder.
In order for it to stick without melting it in a Melting Pot, Versamark will have to be used. If your UTEE is clear, a pigment ink may work, much in the same way as regular embossing powder.

Using Versamark, a clear, sticky ink, will work well! To practice, start by squishing (a very technical term) the pad onto the corner of a sheet of paper.

Keeping your UTEE in a container with a small spoon makes it easy to get to and put away. Scoop a small amount onto the area of the Versamark. You should see some of the UTEE stick to the surface. Repeat this, dumping the extra into your container until you cover the whole area of the ink. Tap your paper to get the last few pieces off. Do not add more Versamark without heating the UTEE you have already put onto your paper.

No melting Pot?
Melting Pots were used in the first two videos of this series;

The results were stunning! How are we going to be able to do this? By using a heat tool. If you use the heat tool you use to emboss with, 1/2 the UTEE will blow everywhere and you will have a heck of a mess! This heat tool is too strong, too forceful for the larger chunks of the UTEE.
Multi-purpose Heat Gun Tool with Stand Is Perfect for Embossing |
The best heat gun for this job is the Ranger Heat It Tool. It blows gently while giving off heat. It takes a little longer for the powder to melt but the powder does not blow around.

Using this Technique
Let´s make an embellishment, something we can put on a card!
Deciding to use a punched flower, similar to the example, three were punched out of 110# Exact Index cardstock and glued together. This created a sturdy base for the layers of melted UTEE.
This time, take the flower and place it on the Versamark to cover it with ink. Once coated, you can use your reverse tweezers to hold it while you dunk it in your UTEE powder.
Third Layer of UTEE |
After the third layer is heated, sprinkle some glitter, mica, iridescent flakes, into it. When you reheat from underneath or above with your regular heat gun, it seals in your decorations. When immediately done you will want to push it into the warm UTEE a bit.

Choice of Glitter |
This time while it is hot and melted, sprinkle glitter and watch it sink into the liquid UTEE.
Look at the finished product!

Stamping in melted UTEE
This is an example of stamping into hot UTEE. A talk about adding a layer of Triple Thick was mentioned to preserve the gold powder that had been added. Triple Thick is a sealer much like MOD Podge.

The square was then decorated and left on the blue silicone mat. The silicone won´t be affected by the heat. It was heated from above with the use of the cylindrical embossing gun. It blew harder and heated quickly.

We needed it hot enough for the colored Pearl Ex to melt into the UTEE before the stamp was applied. As soon as the heat was turned off, the stamp of a rose was pressed into the UTEE and left there to cool. The stamp was from the set ´Mindscape Fall´ from Inkadinkadoo.

Colors were heated until they melted. |
When you choose your stamp, make sure you use something like Stazon or Versamark on your stamp so that when the UTEE cools, it releases the stamp.
